The Virtual Brain

Within a big orchestra.

The Virtual Brain was built from an open-source philosophy to provide a platform for the scientific community to run brain simulations at a scale similar to what we measure in human neuroimaging research.

The bulk of our efforts went into:

  • creating an interface that could use empirical data as the starting point for simulation
  • modeling brain dynamics through mean-field approximations
  • ensuring compatibility with other open-source platforms by using Python as the core-language

This choice means there are things that The Virtual Brain does not do:

  • It does not model individual neurons
  • Data analysis options are sparse
  • There is a default connectome, but no underlying database from which other data can be accessed
